I’ve never had an artist act annoyed about asking the cost when there’s a SPECIFIC IDEA in mind… Ex: “I’d like to get a black and grey realistic raven, 4x6 inches, on my right thigh. Can you estimate the price, please?” But spitballing the price of a sleeve when you have no idea of the images, duration/hours, level of detail, style, etc that you want (ie. You’re only half serious about the idea)… I imagine that’s exhausting.

I think tipping is ridiculous! The tattoo artists tell me the price they want me to pay for the tattoo. Why would I add extra to the agreed upon price? They should set their “tip” in the price of the tattoo fee they quote.

I’ve been wanting a tattoo for probably close to a decade now but just haven’t put much thought into it. Maybe I should say I’m more open to getting one instead. My fiancé doesn’t have any and doesn’t seem to be opposed to me getting any…. However, she made a joke that I take a long time to figure out what I want on a menu when we go out to eat, so figuring out what I want on me permanently seems like an impossibility. 😂😅

As a woman I can say that the bad atmosphere is mainly due to it being a very male-centric environment, and the males themselves feeling like tattoos are a "tough guy" sort of thing. A lot of misogyny in there as well. No matter what a woman wants it's "stupid": if it's too dainty it's "dumb" and they'll roll their eyes or laugh or call you pet names; if it's too large or bold then "it's not feminine enough". My first tattoo artist treated me like I was a "dumb little girl" who'd walked into the boys' club and disturbed them for the tattoo... that she had booked many months in advance - and which the artist hadn't actually SEEN until the day of!... Then when I spoke to another male artist for a different tattoo (a simple black cat silhouette, about 10cm tall), he told me that "that's the problem with you broads, you don't understand scale and level of detail and you think everything can be done because you simply cannot grasp the concept of lineweight". This is an approximate translation from my language, but I guarantee that this tattoo wasn't "too small" (it was a pretty decent-sized black silhoette of a cat, exactly what you'd imagine) and as an ARCHITECT I grasp the notions of "scale" and "lineweight" better than most, thank you very much. After these two messy interactions it's all female artists for me. And when I see these dark tattoo studios with a biker theme or where the artists' portfolio is all just realism pieces that scream "toxic masculinity" I tell my friends to stay away from those places, even if the technical aspect of the portfolio pieces is great. Tattoo red flags for a portfolio: the classic lion + rose + stopwatch + archangel Michael + Greek statues + Bible quotes / God stuff + hands in prayer + random portraits of seductive looking women... You can really tell a lot about a place and its' artists by the types of things their clients get from them. And yeah, I live in a country that's taking a very long time to evolve socially :)). But we're getting there! I'd say the tattoo industry is already a lot more friendly than it was 12 years ago, when I got my first... and there are also a lot more female artists finding their footing. So that's perfect!

For the first guy. Why get a tattoo on a body part that isn't exposed? It just makes sense to get them around your neck and forearms.
